From Odisha’s Craft Traditions to a Moment of Honour

A Custom Pipili Appliqué Artwork for National Space Day at ORSAC

We are delighted to share a special milestone in Aegirine’s journey—one where the timeless craftsmanship of Odisha became part of an occasion celebrating India’s achievements in space, innovation and exploration.

For the National Space Day celebration organised at ORSAC (Odisha Space Applications Centre), Aegirine had the honour of creating a custom Pipili appliqué artwork that was presented as a memento to dignitaries attending the occasion. Created especially for the event, the artwork was conceived to bring together two seemingly different worlds—the centuries-old textile traditions of Odisha and the limitless possibilities of space exploration.

At the heart of the artwork is a rocket journeying into space, surrounded by celestial elements representing the vastness and wonder of the universe. Framing this contemporary composition are intricate floral and ornamental motifs inspired by the visual language of Pipili appliqué, one of Odisha’s most distinctive traditional textile crafts. The result is a meeting of heritage and innovation, tradition and aspiration, craftsmanship and exploration.

For Aegirine, seeing a piece of Odisha’s traditional craftsmanship presented to distinguished guests at a National Space Day celebration was a deeply meaningful moment. It reaffirmed our belief that traditional crafts have a place not only in the past, but also in the conversations of the present and the possibilities of the future.
